About

“Soft words produce hard hearts,” says John MacArthur. How true this is. And the preaching that comes from many modern, man-centered churches is soft and unable to tenderize the stony hearts of men. How urgent it is that we find godly preachers who have a high view of God and a high view of Scripture.

Faith by Hearing is designed to collect and categorize the ever-growing availability of great Reformed and conservative evangelical audio preaching & teaching that has a high view of God and Scripture. This is not merely a machine gun listing of sermons and lectures (though it may seem like that at times.) This is a personal project to encourage others to be blessed by the preaching and teaching of godly men who are faithful to the all-powerful Word of God.

Personally, I’m Todd Shaffer. I work in the visual arts and entertainment. I live in Montreal with my wife and four children. I serve at Renaissance Church in the suburbs of Montreal, a young church plant of the Canadian National Baptist Convention.

If you need to contact me, please post a comment. I review all comments before they are posted, and will not post personal correspondence. And if that’s unclear, just tell me not to post the comment. Simple as that.

This is not a site for debates or criticism of the messages linked here.

If you have an issue with one of these speakers or the content of the audio, there are plenty of other forums for you to debate. This is not the place. I will not post critical comments.

If you have the urge to debate on the internet, I suggest you first read the 4 excellent posts by Nathan Busenitz at Pulpit Magazine called The Blog in Our Eyes. It is a clarion call for Christians to exercise wisdom and humility on the internet.

  1. Found your site, erm, about 6 minutes ago. Love the picture, but better yet, love the sermons. Your personal introduction was the first time I’ve read what I’ve been telling everyone – get an mp3 player to sancify and bless your life!
Thanks for a site I will be looking at regularly..

  2. Brother,
Your website is a dream come true! The best of the best, all in one place. From one northern Southern Baptist (I pastor in Michigan) to another – thanks for all your hard work putting this site together. It will be a blessing to me and many others!

    In Christ,
    John

  3. That header image is priceless?

  4. Todd,
Thank you for all your hard work. The site is a treasure. I noticed you went to school in Texas. I grew up in Kerrville. Yeehaw! But now I live and pastor in Southern California. Cool Dude!

    Keep up the good work.

  5. I’m still a newbie to the ipod thing. What’s the best way to listen to my ipod in the car? If I could figure that out, I’d listen a lot more!

  6. Check with an electronics store. There are ways to connect it to your car stereo, but it depends on what your system is. I know of an attachment that connects to a tape player, but no sure how well it works.

  7. Thank God for sites like this. I found your site by accident (or not as God would have it…) while looking for James White material. Keep up the good work

  8. Heretic!

Martin Luther would never succumb to the temptations or trappings of modern culture by using an iPod Shuffle!

I rather fancy he would be plugged in with nothing less than an 80GB Zune. Seriously I just found Faith by Hearing and I feel like I have have found the treasury of treasure. This is GREAT! Thank you!!

Also, can you post that the martyn lloyd jones recording trust has added a mlj podcast on oneplace.com? I think it would be a treasured resource by many…

Thank you for what you do.

  11. Todd,
You really do ROCK! This site is necessary for the building up of God’s people! I’ll be back for frequent visits, brother…

    Shalom Aleichem!

  12. Just found your blog, love it!! What a blessings, you will surely be added to my ever-growing list of blogrolls 🙂 I have subscribed and started listening to a few different pod casts, John Eldedge at Ransomed Hearts, New Life Worship has a ton of different ones, but I like the worship leaders podcast, even though I am no where near a worship leader, I am a huge music freak and it helps me 🙂 My church also has pod casts that folks can listen to if they miss a sermon at http://www.churchoftheopendoor.org
I feel very blessed to belong to a church with a passionate pastor who teacher strongly from the Word of God.
I look forward to exploring your blog more as well. God Bless, and may you have a Christlike Christmas.

  13. Hilarious! I’m glad to see Martin Luther is no longer sporting an IPod Shuffle 🙂

Faith by Hearing is one of my often visited treasured resources!

  16. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this blog site. It is going to be an awesome resource. I have passed the link on to others who seek good bibical audio.

I came here seeking a resource for biblical conferences with themes based on the subjects you cover here on your blog.
I have one question. Where can I find a resource for upcoming conferences?
Please respond to me here or at my blog site.

    Thanks,

    Barry

  17. Barry, good question. At one time Tim Challies kept a very extensive calender when he was more active as a live-blogger. Maybe he still has one somewhere. TheoSource has a widget that contains important dates in church history plus upcoming conferences. Unfortunately, at this writing, it hasn’t been populated with much conference information.

A few blogs that sometimes have conference information before the conference would be, again, Challies and Justin Taylor’s Between Two Worlds.

You can also check the main websites for the conferences you like by looking at the Conference categories (for example Conference 2008) on this site. They usually hit the same time each year.

If you find a good resource let me know and I’ll post it here.

  18. I’ve noticed that our website (www.accradio.com) had some hits coming from here. People are coming to us looking for Barnhouse and Boice. We host so many other speakers as well and I think our values align and we have the same purpose for having a presence on the web. If you think our site would be edifying for your readers please send them along to http://www.accradio.com.

  19. Wow, thank you so much for doing this! I had to tell my husband who loves to listen to Christian books, Audio Bible, sermons and messages on the iPod. Thanks for doing all the hard work to bless Christians all over the world.

  20. Dear Todd
I have just come across you site and I want to let you know I thank God for you and the work you are doing for His name sake and glory. The study of God’s word is so important if we are to grow in the knowledge and love of Christ and with your site to hand we have a wonderful resource to help us do that.
May the Lord Bless you today and always.
    Gill

  21. Wonderful site you have here. I added it to my audio resource page. You might want to check out Britt Merrick from Reality Carpinteria for your Pastor’s list. His preaching was mentored by quite a few of the Pastors you have listed here. He wrote the book “Big God” which is a study on the book of Hebrews.
    Thanks for the great work!

  22. Hi, I thought you might like to freely use this on your website, or give to others or for yourself. It’s a free prayer book by Matthew Henry called ‘A Method for Prayer’ 1710 edition, with added devotional prayers, Bible helps and a glossary of 2400 words of the KJV. You can use the audio files for the book if you like. http://www.mrmatthewhenry.com
